Tips for Refinishing Wood in Australia as a Beginner

Hey everyone! I'm just starting out with wood refinishing and want to work on some items I've picked up from the marketplace. I've had a rough go at staining a pine cabinet, which is known to be tricky. I also got my hands on an old desk that's pretty rough with lots of cracks and an old varnish finish. The problem is that it seems tough to find woodworking supplies and advice in Australia, especially for projects beyond outdoor decking. I heard from an American woodworker about mixing stains or tints with finishes for a better look, but I can't figure out the right ratios or where to find these tints here. Any tips or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I feel you on the difficulties of staining; it can be a real beast to get right. I've been there, and frankly, I try to avoid stains whenever possible! Instead, I recommend starting with a simple homemade wipe-on finish. Just mix some low-odour turps with off-the-shelf polyurethane, and it works wonders—it’s way easier and gives nice results. If you're up for it, shellac flakes can be a great alternative too (though you might need to search a bit outside Bunnings for them). Just keep in mind that finding the right wood color might save you the trouble of staining later!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve actually got some stain from Haymes (always try to support Aussie brands), and I bought their poly topcoat to fix a dining table that had an acetone spill. I totally get what you mean about avoiding stains; I'm on a tight budget and love the look of American walnut, but it can be super pricey! I’m planning to buy timber that’s already in the ballpark color-wise and just try tinting it a bit in the future. Appreciate the tips!

Definitely sounds like a plan! And remember, with timber, sometimes you can find great local options that don’t break the bank. Keep experimenting!
