I'm in the process of replacing my front walkway with modular pavers and there's a single concrete step at my front door that is 7 inches high. Unfortunately, there's only about 3 inches of clearance between the top of the step and the bottom of the door, which makes it tricky to just put a new paver step on top. I'm considering two options: 1) leaving the existing concrete step and adding a thin stone tread, like bluestone, to match the pavers; or 2) removing the step and rebuilding it with pavers for a more uniform look. Has anyone tackled this situation before? Is it worthwhile to rebuild the step or is the first option sufficient? Any experiences or photos would be appreciated!

If the existing step is in good shape, I'd suggest leaving it as is and maybe enhancing it with a stone veneer on top—could really tie together the look. You can also stain the sides to match! But if you notice anything off like cracks or instability, then removing and rebuilding might be your best bet for safety and aesthetics.
Definitely consider rebuilding the step! You’re already investing time and money into updating your walkway, so why not complete the look with a nice, matching step? A janky step can really detract from the overall vibe. A consistent design would make a big difference!
