I'm a beginner in wood carving and trying to decide between basswood and cottonwood for my projects. I know that basswood is widely recommended, but I've heard from Alec LaCasse that cottonwood bark is also a good option. I'd love to get some insights on which wood would be the best choice for carving!

If you can find it, cottonwood can sometimes be pricier or harder to source. Basswood, on the other hand, is generally easier to find and more affordable. I'd suggest starting with basswood to get comfortable with carving, and then maybe explore cottonwood later. Just keep in mind that cottonwood bark isn’t typically available in blocks, which might complicate things a bit. Both options are relatively soft and should be easy to carve, but starting with basswood seems like a smart move.
You didn't mention where you're located, which matters a lot. In North America, basswood is great, while in Europe, Linden is recommended, and Jelutong is popular in Asia. There's really no "best wood"—each type has its own advantages and challenges, so just make sure to choose what’s available to you and fits your needs!
Good luck finding cottonwood in Europe! ? Both of the replies here make solid points, and I’d probably lean towards basswood since it’s easier to get your hands on.

Ok thanks!!
