I'm looking to make a pastry board out of a solid piece of wood, ideally a closed grain type that looks good. The final dimensions of the board will be 24''x24''. Can anyone suggest where I might find a suitable wood slab in Southern California without breaking the bank?

It's not really advisable to go with a single board because of potential warping or splitting. You might want to consider laminating multiple pieces instead. But if you're set on a slab, searching for local hardwood dealers could help; just try googling 'hardwood stores near me'.
