Why Did My Contractor Use That Overlap?

Hey everyone! I'm a bit puzzled about some work my contractor did. He has a good track record, so I trust him, but after he left today, I noticed this overlap in the construction (I pointed it out with a red arrow in my pictures). You can check out the images here: [link1](https://imgur.com/a/SWUshye) and [link2](https://imgur.com/a/tpz9b0Q). I'm not really sure what these overlaps are called, but I'm curious if there's a way to hide them. We're having an awning put up and a porch added onto our house, so I'm hoping this all comes together nicely. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What you’re seeing might just be strapping for attaching the ceiling material. It’s meant to help the drywall (or whatever ceiling coverage you’re using) finish properly without needing to line things up exactly. I’m not sure what you're using outside, but it should help with the overall look!

Thanks for the clarification! I appreciate the insight. I'll definitely ask my contractor about it.

It’s always good to check with your contractor to ensure everything’s on track!

I think the overlap you're seeing is probably just temporary while they get some other work done, like brickwork or window headers. I'm sure your contractor will finish it off properly when everything else is sorted out. Just give it some time; it should look better once the project is complete!

It sounds like you’re referring to Z flashing, especially if it's under the porch. Its purpose is to channel water away from the brick, preventing it from seeping behind. They might be planning to put some wood there next. Just a tip: if that's aluminum flashing, make sure they don’t use pressure-treated wood without some kind of flashing tape in between since PT wood and aluminum can react poorly.
