Hey everyone! I'm doing some electrical work as I framed two new bedrooms in my basement. Currently, I have a 100 amp panel that's fully loaded with 24 breakers. I'm debating whether to install a 100 amp subpanel or upgrade my main panel to 200 amps since we're considering getting a hot tub this year, which requires up to 60 amps. My house has three bedrooms, a gas range, furnace, water heater, central AC, and an electric washer and dryer. I'm also thinking about adding a full bathroom in the basement later on. Any advice would be super helpful!

If you think you'll be using more than 80 amps at once, I'd recommend upgrading the main panel. It sounds like you might need that extra capacity with all the appliances and the hot tub you’re planning to install!
Both options could work, but honestly, I think a 100 amp main panel is a bit outdated these days. Upgrading to at least 200 amps is a better long-term solution. Adding a subpanel in the basement could also be handy, depending on where your main panel is located. You’d need a 6-gauge wire running from the main to the subpanel, which would make managing the circuits for each bedroom and lights a lot easier!

Since my main panel is in the basement, looks like I’ll be pulling permits and contacting the utility company. Appreciate the help!
