I'm revamping my outdoor wood fire pit and I've come across mixed opinions on what the best material is for the base. Some sources suggest using lava rock, while others recommend silica sand or even just dirt. I'm curious about what materials you all have utilized to line the floor of your fire pit. Any suggestions or experiences to share? Thanks in advance!

Make sure whatever you use is easy to clear ash from. That's key for maintenance!
I've been using lava rock for my fire pit, and it's been great. It can handle the heat, and the drainage it provides is awesome. No water pooling after rain either!
I just use plain old dirt for my fire pit. It's super cheap, takes the ashes without a fuss, and it seems to last a long time! I haven't had to replace it yet, just scoop the ash a couple of times a year to keep things tidy.
Same here! I use dirt too, and it holds up well. Just gotta keep an eye on those ashes!

Exactly! Dirt is underrated for pit bases.
