I'm looking to install a shower surround over a steel tub. Can I apply a waterproof membrane like Redguard over cement board and then just paint it? Do I really need to put tile on top? Thanks! - Alex

If you're thinking of just painting over Redguard, that's a no-go. Redguard acts as a moisture barrier but needs a cover like tile to really protect it from wear and tear.
Are you trying to find a cheaper alternative to tile?
Yeah, something easier would be great.
