How to Find Wall Studs in Fire-Rated Drywall?

Asked By GarageGuru123 On

I'm trying to hang some heavy items like electric lawnmowers and bicycles in my new garage, but I've hit a wall—literally! The garage has fire-rated double drywall, so the studs are further back than usual. I've had no luck finding them on my own. Does anyone have tips or tools that could help me locate these studs effectively? Thanks!

You can start looking for the studs from a corner; they're usually spaced every 16 or 24 inches. It’s a solid method that works most of the time!

A magnetic stud finder can save you a lot of headaches. It easily locates the screws behind the drywall. Once you find one screw, you'll know where the studs are, as they follow the standard spacing. Just slide the magnet around to detect those screws.

If you don’t have a magnet, you can also press one against the wall, moving it up and down. This will help you locate the drywall screws, which are attached to the studs. Once you find one, measuring 16 or 24 inches should get you to the next!
