Getting Started with Bulb Lasagna: Tips and Recommendations

I'm excited to try my hand at bulb lasagna for the upcoming spring! I have two deep wooden planters that I want to fill, but as a beginner gardener, I have a few questions. When is the best time in autumn to plant the bulbs? Can anyone recommend affordable online suppliers for bulbs? What bulb combinations do you find work best? Should I keep watering them through winter, or just leave them be until spring? And is there anything else I could plant this autumn for blooms in spring or summer? I'm determined to have a beautiful garden next year, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you’re on the right track! I personally like to mix daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips, but you can also add some crocus for early color. I usually plant mine around Christmas since I procrastinate, but they do just fine! If you're looking for suppliers, I've had good luck with Eurobulbs for cheaper options. As for watering, I don't do much of that in winter—nature usually handles it. Just make sure not to bury them too deep; a little compost is all you need to separate them. Enjoy the process!

Great tip about planting less compost! I've noticed that too—makes it so much easier!

Hey there! You usually want to plant your bulbs between September and November, but you can even get away with planting into December or January, depending on your area. For bulb suppliers, this year's options are pretty limited due to some supply issues, but try looking at Farmer Gracy for good quality. For your mix, I recommend sticking to classics like crocus, daffodils, and tulips—they're generally foolproof. Just remember to plant the pointy end up and test the soil moisture if you think they need water, but usually, they can go without through winter! Best of luck!

Totally second the pointy end up! I learned that the hard way. Happy planting!
