Best Chisel Choices for Beginners on a Budget?

Asked By WoodWorkingNoob92 On

I'm just starting out with woodworking and I have a limited budget to work with. I've decided to purchase a hand saw and a diamond stone for sharpening, but I'm at a crossroads about chisels. Should I invest in one high-quality chisel (if so, what size should I go for), or would it be better to get a few cheaper chisels? I have zero experience with sharpening tools, and I'm eager to learn joinery but want to take it slow while also being able to work on small projects. Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated!

If you're just starting, I recommend going for used chisels, especially those made in the USA or Sheffield – they’re generally reliable. For sizes, having a 1/4”, 1/2”, and 3/4” chisel is a solid setup. Even if you only start with the 1/4” and 3/4”, you'll be able to tackle a lot of projects. Plus, consider adding a bench plane and combination square to your toolkit later on; they’re super useful!

Totally agree! Those sizes really cover a lot of bases. I started with similar options and they've served me well through various projects.

Thanks for the suggestion! I feel more confident knowing which sizes to look for. Bench plane is definitely next on my list!

You might find that a set of three or even six chisels is more affordable than one expensive one. Just remember, all chisels will need sharpening, but investing in a quality sharpening setup like your diamond plate is smart. Stick to reputable brands like the ones from Germany or Sheffield. If you're struggling with sharpening, look up Paul Sellers; he has fantastic videos on the subject!

Good point! A honing guide can make sharpening a lot easier for a newbie.

I’ll definitely check out Paul Sellers’ videos, thanks for the tip!
