Is It a Red Flag If a Contractor Won’t Itemize Their Estimate for a Bathroom Sink Replacement?

I need to replace my undermount bathroom sink after cracking it. I got an estimate from a contractor for $500 in labor and $210 for parts. That materials cost seems high, as I've seen similar sinks for $50-60. The estimate states they won't mark up materials and will use their contractor discount, but when I asked for more details, they only specified 'materials' without breaking it down further. They did offer that I could provide the sink and they'd only charge me for plumbing items. I feel like I'm not being unreasonable in wanting more detail, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm being too picky trying to verify if they are being dishonest. I then asked for more clarity and they responded with an estimate of $40-60 for other plumbing materials besides the sink. Was I wrong to expect a more itemized breakdown?

It’s definitely a bit concerning when they won’t itemize the estimate. If they’re charging $210 for materials but refuse to break it down, it raises some red flags. If you’re allowed to provide the sink and only pay for labor, why not just go that route? I had a similar experience where my plumber helped me understand what I needed to consider when buying my toilet. It’s usually a good sign when tradespeople are open to sharing details to prevent any mix-ups.

I don’t mind a markup either, but if they said no markup, it feels a bit off.

A solid move would be to buy your own sink and get other estimates strictly for the installation. That way, you can compare costs more transparently without the mystery of 'materials' added in the mix.

Honestly, I think you might be overthinking it a little. The materials for plumbing can add up with drains, p-traps, and water lines, which could be around $35 or more. It’s not just about the sink. But I get your concern if they’re hiding things.

I guess I just assumed those parts could be reused since it's just the bowl that’s messed up.
