Concerns About My Siding Installation: Am I Being Too Picky?

So, we hired a contractor to handle our new siding installation, and I feel like there are some serious issues going on. Initially, we requested the removal of the old cement board siding, installation of insulation, and then new vinyl. We also discussed soffits, fascia, and gutters. The bid we signed specified that insulation would be applied over the existing siding, but we made clear that we wanted everything removed. After confirming details through text and phone calls, I thought we were on the same page. However, when we checked on the first day of installation, they were wrapping the house with the old siding still in place!

I called the owner, who initially verified that the plan was correct. They eventually began to remove it, but then I noticed that some areas have foam board instead of plywood behind the siding. When they started installing the new siding, they created huge holes, and instead of insulating, they just attached the vinyl right on top of everything. When I asked the owner about this, he mentioned that the fanfold material they put up isn't actually insulation. Later, I found gaps where I could see behind the siding, and to top it off, the windows weren't installed as we specified!

Given that we had storm damage and our insurance is covering part of this, shouldn't there be more insulation and proper installation involved? Since we are spending quite a lot, I'm wondering if it's standard for siding jobs to be done this way, or if I'm justified in demanding a proper redo. Can anyone share their experiences or any advice?

You’re not being picky at all! It sounds like there was a big misunderstanding about the scope of work, especially if the initial bid promised insulation and proper sheathing. From what you described, it's unacceptable to have the old foam and not see insulation. I would definitely ask for a full stop and a re-evaluation of their work before moving any further. Better safe than sorry!

That's exactly what I'm leaning towards! I just wish they would have communicated better throughout this whole process.

Yeah, communication is key! Make sure they understand what you expect moving forward.

It's definitely not standard to see fanfold or house wrap exposed from the inside. You should have some solid sheathing like plywood or OSB behind there. If you’re seeing gaps or the wrong materials being used, I’d say you have every right to be concerned. Ideally, there should be an insulating layer to help with energy efficiency. Definitely keep pushing for clarification and don’t hesitate to demand quality work!

Thanks for the input! I feel a bit better knowing that I'm not just overreacting. What’s the best way to address this with them?

Document everything! Take photos, keep all communications handy, and don’t back down from insisting they fix these issues.
