Did I Get Scammed by a Paving Company or Not?

I'm questioning whether I fell for a scam or not. A paving company guy stopped by while I was outside, claiming he had leftover materials and could come back in 20 minutes. I ended up negotiating a pretty good price for a 2-3 inch asphalt overlay on my very worn driveway, which is about 1200 square feet. Before saying yes, I checked, and they had tons of five-star reviews online. They showed up quickly with a crew of about 8-10 workers, which made me think they must be legit, right? They compacted the existing driveway and fixed the drainage issues too. It looks good now, and they seem to care about their reputation. Just curious if anyone has an idea of what a fair price for this job would be?

It might not be a scam in the typical sense where they take your money and disappear, but they could be one of those traveling crews that do subpar work. The glowing reviews you found might belong to a different company altogether. They can easily mislead you by claiming to be locals when they aren’t. I really hope I'm wrong about this!

I think it’s definitely worth checking their actual business registration or any local complaints. Better safe than sorry!

For a topper, you might be looking at around $2-3 per square foot, so a total around $2,500 could be reasonable. But your price might vary depending on your location and any prep work they did. If they didn’t do much prep, you got a decent deal for four grand as long as it holds up!

Yeah, they did minimal prep work, so if it lasts for a decade, I'm happy with my decision.
