Looking for Ideas to Increase Airflow in My Barn

I'm trying to improve airflow in my barn but I don't need traditional windows. I'm considering removing the existing windows and replacing them with options that will keep birds and bats out while still allowing air to flow in. My thought is to use mesh screening for the summer and heavy plastic in the winter to block out snow and strong winds. Is it possible to just take out the sashes and leave the window frames so I can have separate spaces? I want to keep it affordable since I can hire a handyman but can't afford a contractor. Eventually, I'd like to install real windows, but for now, I just want better ventilation. Any suggestions?

You might want to check how the aluminum tracks are attached to the wooden frame. If you detach them correctly, you could slide the windows out and swap them in and out as needed. Using chicken wire could definitely help keep critters out. If you're feeling crafty, you could build some frames with mesh or plastic to hang over the window openings!

Thank you! I’ll definitely have a friend help me inspect those tracks.

You can install some metal screen rolls on the existing frames if you don't want to disturb the entire setup. For winter, plywood cut to size could work, giving a solid fit and maintaining the tracks in place for support without damaging the screens.

Do you have any tips on how to get the window sashes out while leaving the tracks intact? That’s what I’m struggling with.

Consider keeping the windows but adding screens to them instead. Another option is to install a whole house fan to help with ventilation. Just make sure that air can come in from lower points as well to create a good flow.

What do you mean by a whole house fan? My setup is in a large upstairs barn.
