Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on whether I should always replace the brickmould when I'm installing a new exterior door. I've got two quotes for a Thermatru patio door, and the labor costs differ quite a bit because one company includes the replacement of the brickmould while the other says mine is in solid shape and doesn't need replacing. The brickmould is in decent condition and could use a fresh coat of paint, but I'm concerned about keeping everything square and plumb since my house is an older 1960's pier and beam model in North Texas, where things are rarely level due to soil movement. Would love to hear your thoughts!

If the new door jamb doesn’t come with its own brick moulding, then it’s totally fine to reuse what you have. You might want to remove and reset it, but there’s really no rule saying you have to replace it completely unless it won't fit with the new door installation. Keep in mind, brickmould is just trim at the end of the day!

Yeah, brickmould does add to the material costs, but it’s usually not a huge amount. The labor is where you really feel the pinch. If you’re okay with the idea of spending a little more now for peace of mind on the door lasting a long time, I say go for it. Just make sure you’re not shelling out cash for something that doesn’t really give you much benefit!
