What Are Your Go-To Solutions for Disposing of Sawdust and Planer Chips?

Hey everyone! I'm currently dealing with a growing pile of sawdust and planer chips from my woodworking projects. Right now, I've got a cheap shop vac that I connect to my planer and tablesaw, but the accumulation is becoming a bit overwhelming. I'm kind of worried about how much I'm putting into my green waste bin—might they eventually have an issue with it? I don't have the space to compost it properly since I live in a small town, and my friends are getting tired of me asking if they need it for their chickens or dog runs. What do you all do with yours?

You can also check if your city has yard waste drop-off sites. Some municipalities allow you to include sawdust and wood chips in your green waste bin, so just be sure to verify that. I've been filling my yard waste bin with chips for years without any hassle!

That sounds promising! I’ll check with mine to see what their rules are.

You could set up a 3x3 compost bin and add some green materials to it. That way, you can turn your scraps into compost! Just remember not to use any walnut sawdust since it can be harmful for composting. It's a great way to recycle your wood waste while getting something useful in return!

Good tip! I didn’t know walnut could be an issue. Gotta keep an eye on what's going in my compost.

Consider putting up an ad on Craigslist or Marketplace. I’ve found that people often come to pick up sawdust for their gardens or animal bedding. Just a few bucks or even free can attract folks who want to use it—I've been doing this with a local kitchen cabinet shop, and it helps me clear out the big bags regularly!
