I'm planning a staycation next week and one of my goals is to tackle the overgrowth behind my property. I originally cut most of it back after buying my house almost 10 years ago, but it's been really tough to keep under control. The main culprits are bitter sweet vines and ivy coming from my neighbor's yard, and they're choking my holly trees and hydrangeas near the property line. I'm looking for the best way to remove these vines, especially since I can't easily pull them out by the roots. Also, what are some effective ways to maintain the area moving forward?

I deal with a fair amount of vines too! I try to pull them manually every few months, which usually takes me about 30 minutes each time. But I totally get that with severe overgrowth it's different; unfortunately, I can't help much with that since I've never tackled a huge mess.

Yeah, I've tried manual pulling, but the roots are on my neighbor's side. The ones I can reach are easy to pull, but those bitter sweet vines just keep coming back. I'm looking for a chemical solution that won't harm my hydrangeas!
