Hey everyone! I have a question about my home's heating system. The vent in my primary bedroom is completely open, which causes it to get really hot compared to the rest of the house. There's no way to close it, so we often have to leave a window open just to keep the temperature comfortable. I'm thinking of swapping it out for a vent cover that I can close to either redirect airflow or to keep the heat in check while we let the temperature rise in other rooms. I'm a bit worried though—are there any risks to changing it out? Is there a reason that open vent was installed? Also, my bedroom is part of an addition, if that matters. Thanks for any advice!

Replacing that open vent with one that can close should be fine! Just make sure you're not blocking a cold air return, since that might mess things up. Typically, an open vent is for returns, and the closed ones are for supply air. You might find some shutoff levers on the sides of your ducts to help with airflow, so check those out! If you mark the ducts with a Sharpie, you can manage the air flow according to the seasons better.

That's good to hear! We actually have another vent that seems to be more of a traditional one, and I suspect that one is the cold air return since I don't feel air coming from it.
