I've been wondering how we got to the point where homeowners have to ask for permission to do things on their own property. Who started imposing restrictions on what we can do as homeowners? When did building permits become necessary for basic maintenance? Is it really the county commissioners who are responsible for this overreach?
I think there should be a movement against any commissioner who doesn't vow to eliminate permit requirements for existing homes. I'm okay with regulations on new builds and industrial projects; I get that. But having to ask for permission to do simple upkeep on a home that I already pay for is just absurd! Maybe if you run a homeowners association, keep your opinions to yourself—most of us aren't fans of how you operate your tiny kingdom.

It's true that many building codes came about because of past incidents where poor decisions led to safety issues. Unfortunately, regulations often feel like they punish everyone for the mistakes of a few. What kind of permit did you run into trouble with?

I've never pulled one either, and I'm set to tackle a big project that will definitely require it. It’s going to be a hassle since my survey doesn't even show easements for utilities, which is a whole other issue!
