Best Harbor Freight Sockets for M12 Stubby Impact?

Asked By GearHead42 On

I just got myself a Milwaukee M12 Stubby 1/2" impact wrench and I'm looking to buy some sockets from Harbor Freight since they're having a 40% off sale this Friday. I mainly intend to use them for automotive and general mechanical tasks. Can anyone recommend which socket sets to go for at Harbor Freight? Should I choose between Pittsburgh, Quinn, or ICON? Also, should I get shallow or deep sockets, and do I need to consider both metric and SAE sizes? I'm aiming for the best value while they're on sale!

Eventually, you’ll find you want a mix of all sockets, trust me. I’m planning to pick up the Quinn standard depth sets myself since I’ve already got both metric and SAE deep impact sockets.

If you're just starting out or are DIY-ing, I'd recommend checking out this metric low-profile impact socket set. It's a solid option and pretty well-reviewed for the price!

What about lug nuts, though? Any recommendations?

The Quinn master sets are definitely the best value! I'd suggest getting the 3/8" set too, just in case. The ICON line is pricier and offers fewer sockets, and honestly, for the price, I think the Quinn ones provide much better value.

But for the 3/8", I'd just need an adapter. Should I still go for it?

Be cautious with sockets that require adapters; you can lose a lot of torque that way. It’s been my experience that it makes a difference.

You might want to check out the Vevor set online. It’s got a ton of adapters for around $55, and while the case isn't the best, it’s a solid buy. SAE is pretty much pointless these days unless you have an older car. I've seen the same set for $65 on Amazon, too.

I was thinking of just snagging the $31 13-piece Pittsburgh set plus a $10 universal joint. I don’t really need SAE since I don’t work on American cars much. I considered the $180 master set, but I doubt I’ll use most of those sockets with an impact, so I’d rather spend less.

That makes sense! Better to save money if you won't use them much.
