I recently became a homeowner, but my new house has been sitting empty for months due to a lawsuit. Now, my yard is overrun with what seems like the world's ugliest weeds. I'm looking for advice on how to tackle this right from scratch. Should I rent some equipment, clear out the weeds completely, and then seed and straw? Or should I use chemicals to kill what I have, cut it low, and then seed and straw? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hey! Here's a solid approach: First, cut the grass low with a bagger and get rid of those clippings. Then, spray some weed killer and let it sit for about 10 days. After that, till the soil to prepare it. Next, mix in your grass seed and fertilizer while dragging it into the soil. Don't forget to spread straw on top and keep the area watered twice a day to help your new grass thrive! Good luck!
Sounds like a tough situation! Just a heads up though, if you don't manage those weeds properly, you might end up spending more than expected. It's better to tackle the weeds first before investing in grass seed. But don't let that discourage you—it's manageable with the right steps!
