Need Advice on Replacing My Condo’s Front Door—Is $4700 Too Much?

I just moved into a condo in Aurora, CO, and I've realized that I need to replace the front door. The existing frame has some damage from a previous break-in. I'm looking for a simple steel door installation—nothing fancy. The lowest quote I've received so far is $4700, and it feels way too high for such a basic replacement. I feel like the bigger companies are overpricing me since it's a small job; my condo is only 700 sq ft, so I don't have extra doors or windows to bundle with. I've noticed mixed reviews on Home Depot and Lowe's, particularly since they tend to contract out work. Any suggestions? I'm willing to pay a fair price, but I can't afford to be overcharged! (I wouldn't be living in a small condo if I had loads of cash!)

You might want to consider buying a door yourself and then hiring a local carpenter or handyman to do the installation. This way, you can avoid the high markup that comes from larger companies, and you'll likely get a better deal on the door itself. Aurora is big enough that you should be able to find someone reliable through local classifieds or community groups. A lot of people have had good luck with this approach without compromising on quality!

Yeah, totally agree with this. Check Facebook groups or local forums for handyman recommendations; they're usually cheaper and more personal than big companies.

While I understand wanting to find a single company to handle the whole process, sometimes it’s worthwhile to consider hiring someone on your own—especially if you're concerned about cost. If you do need a company for peace of mind, make sure to research and ask about their warranties and past customer experiences. It might also help to get a few more quotes to compare prices and services directly.

Good point! Having warranty support is definitely important, especially for installation work. But getting multiple quotes can really help you avoid overpaying!
