Best Budget Countertop Ideas for a Small Laundry Space

I'm in search of a countertop for my basement laundry area, roughly 35 by 35 inches. Finding custom laminate options for such a small space is tricky, especially in Canada, and I'd rather not buy a large panel just to cut it down myself. My current thought is to use plywood, get it cut at Home Depot, and seal it, though I'm aware it may not be as water-resistant as other materials. I'm looking for simple, cost-effective solutions—any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I actually used plywood for my laundry area too, and it turned out great! I applied several coats of urethane varnish, and it's held up pretty well aside from one small area where laundry soap dripped. If I ever replace mine, I’m considering using melamine furniture paint over G1S plywood—definitely a step up in durability!

There are often options to salvage granite from remodels! I visited a stone supplier a while back that had a lot of leftover granite from a kitchen project. They offered to cut it down for a minimal fee. I suggest reaching out to stone suppliers in your area to check for salvaged countertops. It could save you money compared to custom laminates!

You could make a laminate countertop easily! Just have the plywood cut to size, then buy a sheet of Formica and glue it on top. I can find links for materials if needed—just search for 'sheet laminate' on Google. Plus, there are plenty of video tutorials out there to guide you through the process!

That's a solid idea! I did the same with my counter, and it was straightforward—plus, it really adds that nice finish.

I agree, and you can customize the color too! So many options for matching your laundry room.

If you're looking for something nicer but still affordable, local countertop places often have off-cuts they're willing to sell cheap. It's definitely worth making a few calls to see what they have!

Have you checked out Ikea? They offer laminate countertops that are quite affordable and you can cut them to your needed size.
