What Plants Can I Use on My Rooftop Terrace That Last Through All Seasons?

I've just moved into my boyfriend's house in London, and he has this charming little rooftop terrace that's completely bare right now. I really want to transform it into a cozy, welcoming space filled with greenery, but I have no gardening experience at all. The terrace doesn't have a garden to move plants into during winter, so I'm looking for tips on plants that can survive all year round. The space is small, has two low glass walls, a brick wall, and gets extremely hot in summer and quite wet in winter. I'd appreciate any advice or ideas! Thanks a lot!

It might help if you can give a bit more information about your terrace. What are the dimensions? Which direction does it face? Also, how do you plan to use the space? Knowing these details can make it easier to suggest the right plants!

To really make your terrace shine, you should focus on well-draining containers and choose plants that fit the vibe you’re going for—be it modern or traditional. For the containers, a loam-based compost mixed with some grit is ideal since it holds nutrients well. You might want to avoid tall plants since it can get windy up there; they could easily tip over! Consider herbs like rosemary, thyme, and mint for easy options. Phormiums and cordylines add nice structure, while sedums are perfect for some lovely color with smaller pots. If you fancy a mini lawn, try using alpines for a green rooftop look. Just ensure you give them some protection in the winter. Mini glasshouses are also great for growing salads and micro tomatoes. Most importantly, have fun experimenting with your plants!
