Is It Necessary to Test My Tap Water in an Old House?

I recently moved into a century-old home in the Midwest and have been drinking the tap water here. It just hit me that I probably should've tested it before diving in! Have any of you tested your tap water? What are the best ways to go about testing? I've seen some kits on Amazon, but I'm also considering seeking out local testing services. Any advice would be super helpful!

For city water, you can usually request a copy of your water quality report from your local water department. Even if the report says everything is fine, it’s worth noting that water quality can change as it travels through old pipes, so I understand your concern. It's always better to be safe!

Exactly! I know the city water is generally safe, but I worry about plumbing in an old house. Might just be a good idea for peace of mind.

When I had to treat my well water, I used a kit from National Testing Laboratories. They send you a kit, you fill the bottles, and send it back overnight. It’s not the cheapest option, but it gives peace of mind, especially if you’re unsure about what’s in your water. Just a heads up, this service doesn’t cover radon testing!
