I've set up a mini off-grid solar system using 4x 100 watt panels on my patio roof, which feeds into a battery for my computer setup. It works great! Now, I'm planning to install a new breaker box and would like to have the electricians also handle the wiring for my solar panels. I want to do as much prep work as possible before they arrive.
My question is: should I run my current wiring to a charge controller near the new breaker box? Will this setup be good for the electrician to work with, or am I missing some crucial steps or equipment? I'm also considering adding more panels for a total of 800 watts, as I want this to integrate smoothly with the new panel installation without breaking the bank.

Most electricians prefer to deal with the breaker panel and not the charge controller or off-grid components. Since you're redoing your entire panel soon, you might want to consider installing a transfer switch. This way, if you expand your solar system later, you can easily integrate it. You could also set it up to power just critical loads, which can be handy if you have limited space for a full house solar system.
It's smart to have a transfer switch for your generator planned! For your solar wiring, just remember that beyond the charge controller, you'll need to consider how the system connects to the new panel. It's tough finding solid info on DIY solar setups, but focusing on that transfer switch will definitely make it easier for the electrician in the end.
