Do I Need an Expansion Gap for a Small Piece of Plywood on My Tub Deck?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some hands-on advice regarding my new drop-in tub installation. We've built the box out of plywood, and there's a small 30" by 9" piece on the deck that fits pretty snug against the wall. I know that standard 4x8 plywood usually requires a 1/8" gap for expansion, but I'm wondering if that's really necessary for this smaller piece. I can ask my contractors to redo it, but is it essential to have that gap?

Honestly, I don't think an 1/8" expansion gap is necessary for a small 9" piece like that. Unless it’s going to be exposed to a lot of moisture, you should be fine! Is that piece going to be covered with something waterproof?

Yep, we’re planning to cover it with either Ditra or Kerdi before tiling.
