I recently returned home after being away for a week, and my garden is now overrun with weeds! I'm in Pennsylvania, and we've had some seriously hot, humid weather combined with sporadic downpours. I can't seem to keep up with them, especially since some of these weeds are towering at 4 feet! Fabric weed barriers aren't cutting it, and I'm really against using chemicals. Once I manage to clear them out, what are the best methods to keep these weeds at bay?

One effective way to keep those weeds in check is to layer down some mulch. It helps not only to suppress weed growth but also retains soil moisture, which is crucial during hot months. You’ll want to keep applying it after clearing your garden to hinder new weeds from sprouting.
It’s tough out there right now with weeds popping up seemingly overnight. I've had success using cardboard and wood chips for sheet mulching, and it helps prevent most pesky weeds. In areas where the weeds are aggressive, like thistles, just keep pulling them up or even cutting their seed heads off if you're pressed for time. Plus, planting annuals closely can help shade out new growth!
I feel your pain! If those weeds are already towering at 4 feet, it might feel daunting. Best advice is to regularly check and cut them down with a hoe or a similar tool. I suggest focusing on smaller areas at a time and being consistent. Also, consider using sheets or bagged mulch along with grass clippings for better coverage. It might take a bit of effort, but eventually, it pays off!
