Why Does My Closet Smell So Bad?

I just moved into this house about four months ago, and I didn't notice any smells during the walkthroughs. However, there's this one closet that has a really awful odor—like poop. The closet has an A/C intake duct running through it, and despite checking the duct itself, I couldn't find any weird smells coming from that area. There's nothing else in the closet except for a wooden shelf I replaced for other reasons. The duct is insulated and wrapped in metal foil. Any thoughts on what could be causing this smell?

Honestly, have you or anyone been using that closet as a bathroom? I mean, it sounds gross, but sometimes cat people can be a bit...odd with their litter boxes. Just saying it might be worth a check!

Haha, right? You never know what people do with their spaces!

It sounds like you might have something growing in there, like mold or mildew. Have you checked for any leaks or pests? If the smell is persistent, try washing the walls and spraying them down with disinfectant like Lysol. And just in case, it's worth considering if something was painted over poorly before you bought the house.
