Oops! Used Mineral Oil Instead of Mineral Spirits for My Rubio Monocoat Project – What Now?

Asked By CraftyPineapple42 On

I accidentally grabbed mineral oil instead of mineral spirits after sanding my project. I was supposed to use the spirits for cleaning before applying Rubio Monocoat. I totally blanked out! Is there any way to fix this or should I just start over?

Test out some finishes on a scrap piece first. Something like Tung oil or Danish oil might work fine alongside the mineral oil, but it’s always good to test it out before going for your main piece.

Starting over might be your best move to ensure a clean finish. If the mineral oil is on there, it can really mess with the adhesion of your Rubio Monocoat. You could sand down the area to remove the oil, but it might be easier just to begin again for peace of mind.

You could try doing an acetone wash to clean the surface, but be sure to wear good PPE! Just double-check what finish you were aiming for; it can help decide your next step.
