Should I Opt for Gas Appliances in My 1950s Home?

Hey everyone! I'm contemplating whether to add gas to my house for a new cooktop and some wall-mounted heaters. My place dates back to the 1950s and, while it had gas service before, the meter is now decommissioned and the old gas lines will need replacing. At the moment, there's no HVAC system, and I just swapped out my electric water heater. I have plans for a central HVAC system in the future, but that's a big project and not feasible financially at the moment. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this!

If you're looking for alternatives, consider going for an induction cooktop instead. Plus, once you're ready to upgrade, mini-split heat pumps can be a great option for heating! They're efficient and worth looking into.

What’s your main reason for wanting gas? If it’s about the cooking experience or cost efficiency, those details matter! If heating with electric is running up your energy bills (and it sounds like it is!), managing upgrades to your electrical panel will be necessary for any substantial changes.

Just a heads up, if you’re looking to hook up to city gas, check if you need to bring it in from the street. We had a similar situation, and installing the meter for heat conversion was cost-free for us. Might be worth asking your utility about possible options!

I love cooking with gas, but it really comes down to the cost involved and how long you plan to stay in your home. Do you have access to cheap gas in your area? That's a big factor!
