Is it a bad idea to dig a pond in my rental’s backyard?

I'm considering digging a small pond (about 4ft by 4ft) in the backyard of my rental property. I'm on a year-long lease but plan to stay longer. This would be my first time doing something like this, and while I have some great ideas for the pond, I'm torn between wanting to do it for the experience and the comfort it would bring versus the possibility of it being a wasted effort since I might want to do a better job at a future home I actually own. What do you all think?

Honestly, it might not be the best move to invest time and money improving a property you don't own. Have you talked to your landlord about it? If they’re okay with the idea, that’s a step in the right direction, but still think hard about whether it's worth it since you'll likely leave in a few years.

I feel you on wanting the experience, especially if you're 18 and just setting up a new place. But moving fish and plants later could be a hassle. Maybe rethink the focus?

A pond sounds awesome! Just remember, things can change fast in rentals, like management and your needs. Maybe put some of that energy into saving for your own place in the long run. But if your dad supports the pond, it could be a fun project! Just stay cautious since you don’t want to get stuck if plans go sideways.

Totally agree! Enjoy the project but keep an eye on the future. It could be a blast while it lasts!

Does your landlord know about the pond? If they’re fine with it, that's a plus! Just keep in mind that your living situation can change at any moment, so maybe think about a hobby that you can take with you, like setting up an aquarium. It could be a safer bet while still letting you enjoy your love for water features.

Yeah, they’re on board with it as long as I make it safe. I'm super excited about the pond idea, but I do see your point. I'll have to weigh my options!
