How to Block Light for My Neighbor’s Plants While Staying Cool?

I've got this shared roof terrace with my neighbor, separated only by a fence. My neighbor is super into his plants and has asked me to keep the door curtain closed after dark so no artificial light spills over. Usually, I haven't minded, but with the heat of the day, I really want to leave the door open to cool down my place in the evening. I thought about putting fabric against the fence to block the light, but I'm not sure what type to use. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Honestly, this seems like a problem for your neighbor to solve. Just keep them in the loop!

You could give your neighbor a heads up about keeping the door open due to the heat. It might help if he knows where you’re coming from, and he might even come up with a solution if it bothers him too much.

I’m curious about why the artificial light concerns him so much. By the way, it’s nice that some places cool off after dark—I'm kind of stuck with the heat over here!

Have you thought about using shade cloth? It’s perfect for blocking light while still letting some air circulate. That could be a good compromise!

What about using a bamboo fence roll? It looks pretty natural and works great as a divider without blocking out all the light.

A picture of your setup would be helpful! If the fence isn't cutting off the light well enough, maybe a nice shower curtain could do the trick. I use them for my tent outside, and they hold up pretty well to the weather. Just a thought!
