I've seen some YouTube videos about making coasters from plywood and I'm curious about whether it's a good idea, particularly using blockboard, since I've heard that plywood can be treated with harmful chemicals. Also, do coasters need to be food-safe? I'd love to get some advice on this!

You don't need to worry about food safety with coasters since you're not eating off them! Plywood can be a good choice, but make sure you seal it properly. Just a heads up: dishwasher chemicals can really damage wood, so keep them away from there.
Plywood is generally fine for coasters! Just avoid putting them in the dishwasher since that could ruin them.
