How Can I Fix My HVAC Vent After Drywalling My Basement?

I recently finished my basement and ran into an issue with the HVAC vent. The original builder had a vent installed directly on the HVAC system, but when I framed and drywall the soffit, I didn't account for that. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can fix this easily? Appreciate any help!

What you can do is remove the register and frame around the vent with wood, making sure there’s no gap between the HVAC and the drywall. Tape it up with HVAC duct tape, then install the register outside of the drywall. It’s not the prettiest solution, but it definitely should work!

Oh, and don’t forget to seal the duct tape with some air duct sealant for a better fit.

Haha, your description of DIY makes it relatable! Seems like every project I tackle ends up a bit rough around the edges.

You could look into getting an extension that brings the vent flush to the ceiling. It’s not too complicated, and you should be able to handle that part!

First off, you can remove the old register and grab some duct sheet metal from a local hardware store. Make a sleeve to extend the duct so it’s flush with the new drywall. Just make sure to use screws and HVAC mastic to seal everything up nicely.
