Suggestions for Native Grasses in a Roadside Gulley

I'm dealing with a gulley in my yard that faces the road, and it's a bit deep on one end, making it a hassle to keep mowed. I'm considering alternatives like weed block and river rock, but that might cost too much. Instead, I'm looking for tall grass options that can handle occasional flooding during heavy rains (there are drainpipe openings at both ends) and that won't be an eyesore or take over the lawn above, which is mostly weeds right now. I've looked into big bluestem, but I'm not a fan of its look, and I've thought about switchgrass as well. Any other suggestions for the Knoxville area in East Tennessee? Thanks a lot!

Honestly, big bluestem can be stunning, especially if you opt for a reddish variety. The shape and color can really add a nice touch to your gulley, so it might be worth reconsidering!

I looked up some more images and you're right—the reddish version does look appealing! I'll keep it on my list for sure.

You might want to check out some Juncus species. They're generally good for moist areas and can really thrive in those conditions without needing too much upkeep.

That sounds great! The area is in full sun, and it can be tough to water since it's a bit far down. If Juncus doesn’t require consistently moist soil, I’m definitely interested!
