What’s the Best Way to Update Honey Oak Trim One Room at a Time?

I've got a house filled with honey oak finishes—cabinets, stairs, a detailed handrail, doors, floor trim, and window sills. I'm currently in the middle of renovating my primary bathroom, which involves painting the vanity cabinets. My main dilemma is whether I should keep the existing honey oak trim, especially for the door leading to the main bedroom. It's quite close to another door that's also honey oak, and I'm worried having two different door colors might look odd. I want to remove all the honey oak, but considering I have a three-level house and the stairs are right in the entryway, it feels overwhelming. I'd hate to put the old trim back after updating the bathroom, so I'm looking for advice on how to approach this renovation project effectively.

If you’re worried about aesthetics, consider keeping some of the honey oak but updating other areas gradually. Just remember, renovations take time and it’s okay to have a mix during the upgrade process! It might even allow you to save money and enjoy some of the original charm while you figure out your plan.

I hear you on the honey oak! A great alternative could be staining instead of painting. It can really enhance the existing wood and give it a fresher look without losing its character. Plus, matching different wood tones can create a more cohesive vibe throughout your house.

Exactly! The right stain can transform that wood and make it feel more upscale, rather than just painting over it.

It sounds like you have some lovely woodwork, but I totally get wanting a different look. You might want to consider doing the trim gradually. It’s completely normal for things not to match during a renovation, especially if you're doing it one room at a time. Just embrace the process!

Yeah! And honestly, different color trims on either side of a door can actually add a unique charm to a space!
