How to Update My Outdated Basement Trim Without Sanding?

Hey everyone! I'm really not a fan of the outdated golden oak trim in my basement from 1982. I'm considering options like painting or restaining, but I want to avoid the hassle of sanding or stripping. Would chalk paint work well? Or should I use a gel stain for the walnut doors and then maybe go for white trim at the base? What do you all think would be the most durable and easiest way to refresh this space? I'd appreciate any tips or advice you have! Thanks!

Honestly, 90% of the work comes from preparing the surface, while the application is just the final touch. There aren’t really any shortcuts if you want it to last! You might want to consider sanding it lightly before painting to ensure good adhesion. Or at least test a section to see how it holds up.

Ugh, I was afraid of that. But I'm still open to ideas! So do I just sand it lightly and then paint over?
