Hey everyone,
I have some sad news—I need to put my beloved corgi to sleep soon. She has a beautiful honey-colored and white coat, and I'm planning to make her urn out of wood that resembles her fur. I'm currently considering red oak and willow, but I'm unsure about the finishes to use. I don't want the wood to yellow over time, and I'm thinking about just using a top coat of shellac. I would really appreciate any suggestions for the best types of wood and finishes for this project. Thanks!

I'm really sorry about your loss; she sounds like a sweet girl. Maple would be a good choice for a light color, but it can darken if you use an oil-based finish. If you want a nice red hue, Padauk is beautiful but can be tricky to work with since the dust is really staining. It's best to test finishes on some scrap first to see how they'll look!
Sorry to hear about your corgi! For the wood, consider using birch if you want something light. Canary wood could also be an option. If you want a nice white finish, maple is a great choice, especially if you go for some unique grain patterns like quilted or Birdseye. Just keep in mind that oil-based finishes tend to yellow, so if you're aiming for a pure look, try to avoid those. Good luck!
I found this great YouTube video that covers a lot of options for wood and finishes—might help you out! Here’s the link: [https://youtu.be/kL9KVUfOkfg?si=vULf2rU8tWLihlDG](https://youtu.be/kL9KVUfOkfg?si=vULf2rU8tWLihlDG)
