How Can I Get Rid of Fruit Flies in My Kitchen?

Asked By CleverBeagle42 On

I've noticed some fruit flies flying around in my kitchen, and I'm not entirely sure why since we make an effort to keep things clean. We don't leave food out, and we wash our dishes every night (no dishwasher here!). I'm not sure if they are coming from my small plants either. I've set up a trap using white and red wine vinegar mixed with dish soap. Thankfully, the situation isn't too overwhelming yet, but it's still a bit worrying. I'd really appreciate any tips on how to deal with this!

You should definitely try getting some yellow sticky traps; they really help catch those pesky flies! You can find them on Amazon; they're total lifesavers!

Just a heads up: these little guys can lay eggs in your fridge, especially in the back. They reproduce quickly, so make sure no food is out on the counter. Check for any forgotten items like potatoes or stuff in pantry corners that might be rotting. Dirty dishes are like a buffet for them, so wash them as soon as possible. I found that covering the drains helps, too. I tried vinegar traps, but they didn't catch much for me. A Katchy or Dynatrap fan works wonders without chemicals. Oh, and believe me, I know how annoying they can be! My neighbor had a serious infestation that spread throughout the building.

Your ex-neighbor sounds like a nightmare! It's unbelievable they let things get that bad. Hopefully, your landlord can step up and address it.

One trick I found effective is to pour boiling water down your drains every day. If you're interested, you can also get a product like Zevo—just make sure to turn off all the lights in the kitchen to attract the bugs to the device’s light. It works like a charm!
