How Do I Properly Replace Old Wood Windows with Vinyl Ones?

I'm planning to replace some old wood windows in my house and could use some advice on the process. I remember doing a similar project with my dad a while back, where we had horizontal cedar siding. We cut out the old window, trimmed the siding back a few inches, installed the new vinyl window with a nailing flange, taped everything, replaced the siding over the flange, and finished it off with a trim board and some caulk. Is this the correct approach, or is there a better method that I should consider?

Before you dive in, consider the age of your current windows. If they’re only a few decades old, it might be worth looking into restoring the wood instead of switching to vinyl. Some homeowners have great success with that route! But if you prefer the vinyl look and feel, that's totally valid too. Just make sure to plan your steps well for the installation.

You're on the right track! The general process is sound: use membrane flashing tape, and don't forget to reinstall the trim afterward. Just keep in mind that if you’re switching to insert windows, the installation is a bit different. They typically just need caulking since they fit right into the existing frame, while full-frame windows will need more exterior work. Good luck!

I can relate! I have an older cedar lap siding house too, and while I hesitated to go for vinyl, my budget just doesn’t stretch for wood options. I’m even considering swapping out just the sashes for double pane glass instead of full replacements. Depending on your window condition, sometimes that’s a feasible middle ground if you want to stick with wood for a few.
