My mum decided to install astroturf a couple of years ago, and since then, we've noticed a big drop in bird visitors. We also have a large cat next door that doesn't help the situation. I'm looking for simple changes we can make to encourage more wildlife. I've seen a few bumblebees around because of some flowerpots we have, and I even spotted a shrew recently! Any suggestions?

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of astroturf for wildlife. It gets really hot and can potentially harm any small animals that venture onto it. Instead, think about replacing it with real grass or planting some native trees and shrubs. Just helps the environment a lot!
You can definitely make a difference with some containers! Aim for ones that can have different areas like wildflowers, herbs, and lavender, which will draw in pollinators. Having a water source is also key—consider creating a mini pond in a tub, but make sure there's a way for small animals to get out if they fall in!
One great idea is to set up a mini container pond. It can be a fun project and will attract all sorts of critters! Also, consider adding more plants and shrubs at ground level. They provide cover and food for birds and bugs alike.
