Building My Own Container Home at 18 – Need Some Guidance!

Hey everyone! I'm 18 and super excited about the idea of building my own container home on my grandmother's land. It's a nice spot right next to a small road and a stream. I'm curious about the planning permissions I might need, especially since I'm in Ireland and the rules can be pretty strict. I'm also wondering what the costs would look like if I planned to use 2-3 40ft shipping containers and do most of the work myself. Is it possible to avoid using a septic tank? What are some of the biggest challenges I might face with this project? I'd appreciate any insights, even if you're not totally sure! Thanks a ton in advance!

Honestly, it might be more trouble than it's worth unless you have a decent budget. If you're looking for flexibility, consider getting an RV or a mobile home instead. If you're dead-set on a container, maybe explore those foldable container homes—they're a bit easier!

This is definitely a huge project! I’d recommend checking out more niche subreddits or forums specifically for people in Ireland who have done similar things. Asking something like "Has anyone built a container home in Ireland? What did it cost and what pitfalls should I avoid?" might get you some really useful insights. Good luck!

Have you thought about going for a kit home? It’s usually a cheaper option and tends to comply better with local building regulations. Plus, they often come with better insulation and moisture management! Containers might look cool, but they can be a real headache with heating and cooling.

Just a heads up, you may find that building from scratch could be more affordable than working with containers. Shipping containers have strong structural designs for stacking and shipping goods, which makes them pricey and not super energy efficient. If you're looking at this as a serious living situation, maybe reconsider your approach!

Totally agree! Plus, containers need a lot of insulation, which can add to your workload. Just something to keep in mind!
