Thinking of Adding a Concrete Patio—What Should I Consider?

I'm planning to enhance my backyard with a concrete patio that will connect to my house's foundation. While I know this is a common addition, I'm curious about any potential risks that come with it. My home is still under a 20-year warranty, and I'm worried that installing a patio might void this warranty or complicate claims if issues arise later on. Are there any important factors or pitfalls I should be aware of before hiring a contractor? By the way, I live in Texas, which might affect the situation too.

If you have a foundation issue later on, it’s likely that they’ll blame your patio for it. I recommend sending your plans to your home warranty provider, ideally to their claims department. Ask them directly about how adding the patio will impact your warranty. The best-case scenario is if they respond saying it won't affect your warranty claims. Keep that email just in case! Good contractors will tell you that while adding the patio shouldn’t void your warranty, it might complicate things if you need to make a claim.

Great advice! Should I prioritize hiring an insured and bonded contractor? I'm debating whether to go with a cheaper bid or pay more for a reputable company.
