What’s the best way to install laminate flooring over carpet?

I'm currently renting and unfortunately can't rip out the carpet, but I really want to switch to laminate or wood flooring. I've seen some videos suggesting plywood as a base, but I'm curious if there are any other options available. The carpet I have is thin and rough, not fluffy at all, so I think it might not be too difficult to cover up. Any advice would be appreciated!

There really isn't a 'proper' way to do this since it's not typical. If your carpet is low-pile, you could potentially lay down a floating vinyl plank floor over it. But beware, moisture might get trapped under there and could lead to mold.

Honestly, you might be better off negotiating with your landlord to remove the carpet and either put it back later or find a new flooring option together. LVP might actually increase the value of your rental. Plus, covering the carpet might just damage it beyond repair.

Totally! My landlord wasn't keen on it at first, but once I showed them how it could boost the place's value, they were more open.

That's smart, just make sure you get any agreements in writing. I've had tenants who assumed verbal agreements would hold up, and it doesn't always work out.

Honestly, if you're renting, you might want to think twice about spending money on this project. If you're planning to stay for around four years and have a pet, I get it – laminate can be easier to clean. Just be sure it won't ruin your carpet or your security deposit!

Exactly! I'm in the same boat and I think it could help with cleaning, depending on the carpet. But yeah, just keep an eye on any lease terms!
