Is it Worth Giving Up on a Built-in Fridge for More Space?

Hey everyone! So, we just moved into this awesome house, but there's one thing that's driving us crazy: the built-in, counter-depth side-by-side refrigerator. It's 36" wide and super inconvenient because we do a lot of cooking and love to keep a variety of ingredients on hand. We even moved our old, spacious French door fridge to the garage to help, but we really want more fridge space in the kitchen.

Our kitchen is open and can handle a larger fridge that sticks out a bit, but I know there will be a gap at the top that won't look the best. I'm okay with that, as I can cover it nicely to match the cabinets. Has anyone else experienced this dilemma? Did you opt for a bigger fridge despite the looks?

I've had a similar struggle! I eventually chose to prioritize functionality over aesthetics. It wouldn't hurt to try swapping your fridges and see how it feels. If you don't like it, you can always go back. Just remember, it's your kitchen!

You're right, I should just test it out! I’ve got a lot to work with here, being flexible is key.

Totally get where you're coming from! A lot of folks end up ditching the built-in look for a fridge that actually meets their needs. When you're cooking a lot, function definitely trumps aesthetics. If you go with the bigger fridge, you could always add a simple trim above to make it look less awkward later. It sounds like the extra space will be worth it!

Thanks for the reassurance! I really just need a functional space that works for my cooking habits.

I recently upgraded to a counter-depth LG Max fridge. It's not as big as standard models, but it does have 26.5 cubic feet, which is more than many others in the same category. I think the side-by-side arrangement can limit space, so maybe consider a bottom freezer option instead. It really helped us organize better!

Good point! I didn't realize how limiting the side-by-side could be—might need to rethink my options.
