Why is code enforcement so strict about permits for minor updates?

I've got a question about code enforcement in my area. It seems like for the smallest changes, like swapping out an old sink or water heater, you need to get a permit from the county. Adding just one electric outlet? That requires a permit from the city too. The problem is, hardly anyone actually pulls these permits—neither DIY makers nor contractors! It feels pointless and often goes unenforced. It's confusing trying to figure out which regulations are really a big deal and which are just red tape. Plus, it often feels like a money grab instead of focusing on safety. And the rules seem totally inconsistent; I can build outdoor steps without permits, as long as they're not tied to my house or deck!

I hear you! Sometimes, it seems like the city council makes up these rules that the inspectors themselves aren’t even on board with. It’s frustrating, right? Like in my city, the only thing code enforcement really focuses on is tall weeds! The last time I needed a permit for something big, like getting my roof replaced, it wasn't even a local inspector who showed up—it was some contractor from 90 miles away! I’ve done tons of work around my place over the years without a single permit, and I doubt they'll ever start checking.

Exactly! It's like no one literally cares unless there’s a bigger issue. I had my roof replaced too, without pulling any permits, and the work was so bad, I wish I had gone through the process now!

Just keep in mind, if you ever run into an issue, some insurance companies can deny claims if it turns out something isn’t permitted. Better safe than sorry, right?

That’s a common misconception! As long as you’re not doing anything super shady, you usually won’t have any problems with your insurance.
