Should I Hire a General Contractor or Just Individual Handymen?

I'm trying to figure out when it's better to hire a General Contractor (GC) versus getting individual tradespeople for my home repairs. My GC said the minimum cost is around $10,000, but I have a small number of things to fix. For example, I'm looking at replacing all my windows, which could really run up the costs. If I only have this major project plus some minor repairs, would it be worth it to hire a GC, or should I just contact a window specialist and a handyman? Are there any advantages to hiring a GC, like spotting additional repairs and possible discounts through connections?

Definitely consider hiring a GC if you're juggling multiple contractors and don’t have the time or patience to manage everything. Sure, it might cost more, but it can save a ton of hassle, especially when permits and inspections are involved. If you're just doing smaller jobs and aren't in a rush, you can save a lot by going solo. For instance, I managed a pretty extensive addition myself and saved over $40,000 just from handling the trades myself!

That’s really good to know! I do have some time to spare, so maybe I’ll manage it myself.

In my experience, you really only need to hire a GC for bigger projects where lots of different trades need to be coordinated, like a full basement finish with electricians, plumbers, and such. If it's just about replacing windows, I'd skip the GC and go directly to a window contractor and maybe a handyman for the smaller tasks. Just keep in mind that this can vary based on your specific situation.

A GC can really shine if your project needs solid project management and coordination of multiple trades. For just a simple window replacement? Not necessary. You might end up paying for services you don't need. Typically, for a smaller repair, a handyman could suffice. They might even come cheaper than getting a GC involved!

Exactly! Go for the simpler route if you can. You usually get better rates that way.
