Can I Just Plant a Potato and See What Happens?

Hey everyone! I'm completely new to gardening and honestly don't have much experience aside from mowing my grandparents' lawn, which I really enjoyed. This past year has been tough, and I'm looking for a rewarding project to dive into as spring approaches. I was thinking about planting potatoes because they seem easy to handle. Can anyone give me some tips on how to get started?

I've done this a few times! I sometimes just toss store-bought potatoes that have started sprouting into the ground and see what happens. If you're feeling adventurous, just give it a shot! If it works out, awesome! If not, tweak your approach a bit next time.

Totally! You can actually start by 'chitting' your potatoes, which basically means letting them sprout some 'eyes' before planting them. Just a quick Google search will give you tons of info on it. Since spring is upon us, you might want to look into some cool weather crops too since it’s a bit late in the season.

I’ve taken those old potatoes that have been neglected in the pantry and just stuck them in some soil while keeping them watered. Within a few weeks, you’ll see them sprout! Sure, there's a more organized way like planting seed potatoes in rows, but this seems to work fine for me since I always have leftover potatoes.
